Coffee break

A peek outside in the morning revealed that cloudbase was low but it wasn’t too cold. Breakfast was great, as you expect in a Swiss hotel. In no time we were standing on the Nufenen pass (2478m) but there was no good view to be had. The road was dry though, so I had my fun on the ride. From Airolo we took the old road south, which is fast. I was going 120kph round one long sweeper when a motorcycle cop approaced, coming the other way. He lifted his hand off the bar and I thought he was going to wave me over for a ticket. No, I got the biker low-five wave instead. We took the freeway to past the ugly industrial mess at Bellinzona and came off again near Messoco, and stopped for coffee before hitting the old pass road and the next round of twisties.

San Bernadino pass (2066m) was cold and cloudy so we ate lunch inside the refuge. I like the ride along the old road through Splugen, where the road runs alongside the freeway for long stretches without speed cameras. It’s funny being on the minor road, passing the cars on the freeway. We stopped for a little photo break in the Hinterrein gorge before hitting some traffic in Thusis. Traffic was a bit heavy going up to the Julier pass (2284m) and it wasn’t really warm either.

Down the valley to the pretty lake at Silvaplana, we stopped for a quick break in St. Moritz but Marylyn was getting cranky from lack of food and too many hours on the bike. We ran straight past Pontresina and Bivio as fast as the traffic would allow. Thankfully there was a little less traffic going up the Bernina so she got her food at the pass (2330m). The sun had finally decided to come out and do it’s job. We crossed again into Italy unmolested by border security. We crossed the Forcola (2315m) and arrived quite early in Livigno considering we’d crossed five passes of over 2000m in a day. We shopped a bit for necessities and window shopped handbags. I chose the restaurant and was rewarded with an unremarkable dinner in a noisy restaurant. We got an early night.
